Modern Couples

Barbican

Custom designed black and white photography booth in partnership with the Barbican Centre for their exhibition Modern Couples, Art, Intimacy and the Avant-garde, to help promote the exhibition and it's message on social media channels.

Brief

Barbican wanted a black and white photography booth to capture individuals and couples visiting their exhibition, Modern Couples: Art, Intimacy and the Avant-garde at the Barbican centre. The exhibition showcased the work of famous couples throughout art history. It illuminated the creative and personal relationships of couples through a vast selection of artwork and artefacts. Couples included: Dora Maar and Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera; couples who have all forged new ways of creating art, loving and living.

The client wanted the content to reflect the message of the exhibition and help create engagement around the show online.

Idea

We designed a branded photo booth to be installed for the first month of the exhibition, where all content could be shared instantly online using the hashtag #moderncouples. The booth was designed to fit with the style and theme of the exhibition and venue branding, including type and logos. Visitors posed in front of the Barbican booth for a classic, one-pose photo in a striking black and white filter. Lighthouse designed the look and feel to reflect the campaign. Classic and simplistic in design, combining a clean white booth with black and red branding, so that the content and the people in the photos was the focus of the image.

Results

The activation of black and white photography booth engaged different generations throughout the duration of its installation at the Barbican Centre. It was a main source of promotion for the Modern Couples exhibition via social sharing, sparking commentary and discussions. The Barbican booth became instantly recognisable, with the black and white photos dominating social channels, especially Instagram. The photos were featuring as top, most popular photos on Instagram under the hashtag #Moderncouples and the Barbican location. During the course of one month, over 100,000 users were reached online through organic social sharing.
